The Studies Behind Relaxing Nature Sounds

Several studies have been done on why nature sounds relax people and help them unwind.

One of the most popular studies was conducted by researchers from Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS). This study relied on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology to study the brain while nature sounds were played for the subjects.

Their studies ultimately found that nature sounds do have an effect on the body’s sympathetic response and the rest-digest autonomic nervous systems.

The body’s sympathetic response is what triggers the “fight or flight” feeling. Those with high levels of sympathetic response — the subjects with the highest levels of stress — experienced the largest decrease in sympathetic response when played nature sounds.

Interestingly enough, those with low levels of stress actually experienced a slight increase in sympathetic response when played natural sounds as opposed to artificial sounds.

If natural sounds triggered their “fight or flight” response, it’s possible some subjects are simply more comfortable in urban environments surrounded by artificial noises. Or, it simply may suggest that natural sounds are best used when experiencing extremely high levels of stress.

There was also an increase in rest-digest autonomic nervous system activity. The rest-digest system is officially known as the parasympathetic nervous system. It’s associated with the calming of the body, which suggests that nature sounds are, in fact, useful in relaxation.

Scientific studies aside, there are plenty of obvious reasons why nature sounds are useful in relaxing the body and mind.

Many of us associate natural sounds with calming walks, vacations, and sunny days spent with loved ones. Nature sounds are a promise of an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

It’s also suggested that the sounds of waves crashing or water falling are peaceful as they are slow and repetitive. You can listen to it without the fear that it will be interrupted by something like a car honk or siren.

Waterfall sounds for sleeping and studying can transport you to a more peaceful environment without leaving your home. Instead of emptying your wallet for a massage or a white noise machine, you can transport yourself to a peaceful environment through a simple video.
